Australian boulder opal forms within narrow seams and cavities of ironstone. Each stone carries the structure of that origin through its irregular contours, exposed matrix, and a pattern of color that belongs only to itself.
The design begins there. Rather than asking the opal to conform to a predetermined setting, the surrounding gold is developed in response to its outline and proportion. Once complete, the stone and the form become inseparable.

Made by Hand
At my bench,
one piece at a time.
Each setting begins at my bench, where I build the initial form by dripping wax around the proportions of the individual opal. Once the structure has taken shape, I carve it by hand, refining its line, weight, and balance while allowing the stone’s irregular character to remain present.
Through lost-wax casting, the original carving is surrendered and replaced by solid gold. I then refine the cast surface, polish the gold, and set the stones by hand. The finished piece carries the subtle variations and traces of touch that belong to its making.

Australian boulder opal forms within the seams and cavities of ironstone. Rather than being separated entirely from its host rock, the opal is traditionally cut with part of that natural foundation intact.

Opal and finely worked gold benefit from considered handling. A few simple habits will help preserve the stone, its setting, and the character of the finished piece over time.
Everyday Wear
Wear the piece thoughtfully and protect the opal from direct impact, abrasion, and pressure. Remove it before exercise, heavy work, gardening, or any activity where the stone could be struck against a hard surface.
Cleaning the Opal
Gently wipe the stone and gold with a clean, soft cloth. If needed, use a cloth lightly dampened with lukewarm water and dry the piece immediately. Avoid soaking, steam cleaners, ultrasonic cleaners, harsh solutions, and commercial jewelry dips.
Water & Personal Products
Remove the piece before bathing, swimming, or entering a hot tub. Apply perfume, lotion, hairspray, and other personal products before putting on the jewelry so residue does not collect around the opal or its setting.
Storage & Long-Term Care
Store the piece separately in a soft pouch or lined compartment, away from harder gemstones and metal edges. Avoid prolonged heat and sudden temperature changes. If the stone or setting ever feels loose, discontinue wear until the piece can be inspected.
